Hardy Girls Healthy Women is celebrating Maine girls during its 6th annual Girls Rock! Weekend, April 5-6. The weekend includes our 5th annual Girls Rock! Awards, a ceremony that recognizes the accomplishments of five exceptional Maine girls. Here are the five fantastic girls we will honor this year:

Against the Odds Award: Adrienne Damicis, 17, of Scarborough
Adrienne has been a key community figure, president of her high school’s Key Club, and mentor and counselor for Camp No Limits

Community Organizing Award: Jasmine and Christina Smedberg, 13, of Waterville
Jasmine and Christina took a stand against bullying in their community by organizing an anti-bullying walk and rally to raise awareness

Entrepreneurship Award: Derian Chenel Gatewood, 17, of Dexter
Derian started her own business called Dragonfly Designs through which she’s donating 10% of her sales to Womancare, a local domestic violence agency

Health Advocacy Award: Peyton Feener, 17, of Camden
Peyton is a filmmaker with Project Aware, through which she has become a strong advocate for comprehensive sex education and safe communities for LGBTQ youth

Title IX Championship Award: Anne McIntire, 18, of Bailey Island
Anne’s dedication to ensuring girls’ equal access to sports and her passion for ice hockey led her to play a critical role in the establishment of the first girls’ varsity hockey team at Mt. Ararat High School

Congratulations to all our winners!

“Whether it’s leading by example or organizing the school to campaign for social justice, we want to honor girls who are making Maine a better place for other girls to live here,” said Jackie Dupont, Vice President of Research & Programs for Hardy Girls Healthy Women. “We are in awe of the powerful changes these girls are making, not only because it will spark other girls to take the lead, but because their actions also break stereotypes about what girls are capable of doing and what they care about.”
